Short stories, fantasy, science fiction, horror

Short stories have always been a staple of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. They hold a special place in our hearts, offering immersive glimpses into people and places that stretch the limits of our imagination. These genres thrive in short form, where a single idea—whether it’s a futuristic technology, a supernatural encounter, or an alternate reality—can spark wonder, fear, and deep reflection. Many great writers got their start writing short fiction. Where would be without the likes of Robert E. Howard, H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, Ursula K. Le Guin, Harlan Ellison, Octavia Butler and countless others. I grew reading magazines with names like Weird Tales, Amazing Stories, Realms of Fantasy, Cemetery Dance, and the ever popular Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. These publications showcase cutting-edge work from both established writers and emerging voices. For readers, they offer a quick escape or a jolt of insight, blending entertainment with the thrill of discovery.

Here I offer for your perusal some of my favorites short stories. These are just a sample of what’s out there, but I hope you enjoy them.

An Occurance Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose Bierce
